With New Year’s Eve fast approaching, many Floridians are planning spectacular celebrations to ring in 2019. Because of alcohol-fueled celebrations, some people will inevitably make the poor decision to drive while under the influence. New Year’s Eve can be one of the most dangerous nights of the year.
Stay safe this New Year’s Eve by following these tips:
Have a Designated Driver
If you will be drinking in celebration of the holiday, be sure to plan for a ride home in advance. Appoint a designated driver for your group or plan on using a rideshare service such as Uber, Lyft, or a taxi to get home safely. If you are far away from home and a taxi or rideshare is too expensive, sleep at the party location or book a local hotel room.
Put Away Explosives
Fireworks and firearms cause injuries on New Year’s Eve. Intoxicated individuals and dangerous explosives make a dangerous combination, but many people still choose to use these items to ring in the New Year.
If fireworks are unavoidable at your celebration, entrust them to a sober individual and make sure to keep yourself and your fellow partygoers a safe distance from the explosion site.
Talk to Your Kids
If your children are old enough to attend New Year’s Eve parties alone, talk to them about the safety risks involved with the holiday. Ensure that they have a designated driver, local taxi number, or rideshare app downloaded on their phone. Alternatively, you can assign your children a curfew and pick them up from the party at an agreed-upon time.
Leave Your Car at Home
If you are attending a New Year’s Eve gathering, leave your car at home. Not only will this eliminate the risk of driving while intoxicated, but it will also reduce your risk of falling victim to car theft. Thefts spike on New Year’s, targeting cars left unattended overnight. If you must take your car to a party, make sure you lock your vehicle and return early the next morning to retrieve it.
